    A Readout System for the STAR Time Projection Chamber

    We describe the readout electronics for the STAR Time Projection Chamber. The system is made up of 136,608 channels of waveform digitizer, each sampling 512 time samples at 6-12 Mega-samples per second. The noise level is about 1000 electrons, and the dynamic range is 800:1, allowing for good energy loss (dE/dxdE/dx) measurement for particles with energy losses up to 40 times minimum ionizing.     The instability of Alexander-McTague crystals and its implication for nucleation

    We show that the argument of Alexander and McTague, that the bcc crystalline structure is favored in those crystallization processes where the first order character is not too pronounced, is not correct. We find that any solution that satisfies the Alexander-McTague condition is not stable.     Heavy Quark Photoproduction in Ultra-peripheral Heavy Ion Collisions

    Heavy quarks are copiously produced in ultra-peripheral heavy ion collisions. In the strong electromagnetic fields, c c-bar and b b-bar are produced by photonuclear and two-photon interactions; hadroproduction can occur in grazing interactions. We present the total cross sections, quark transverse momentum and rapidity distributions, as well as the Q Q-bar invariant mass spectra from the three production channels. We consider AA and pA collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider and Large Hadron Collider. We discuss techniques for separating the three processes and describe how the AA to pA production ratios might be measured accurately enough to study nuclear shadowing.Comment: Minor changes to satisfy referees and typo fixes; 52 pages including 17 figure

    We investigate the thermal properties of circular semiconductor quantum dots in high magnetic fields using finite temperature Hartree-Fock techniques.     The spectral gap for some spin chains with discrete symmetry breaking

    We prove that for any finite set of generalized valence bond solid (GVBS) states of a quantum spin chain there exists a translation invariant finite-range Hamiltonian for which this set is the set of ground states. This result implies that there are GVBS models with arbitrary broken discrete symmetries that are described as combinations of lattice translations, lattice reflections, and local unitary or anti-unitary transformations. We also show that all GVBS models that satisfy some natural conditions have a spectral gap. The existence of a spectral gap is obtained by applying a simple and quite general strategy for proving lower bounds on the spectral gap of the generator of a classical or quantum spin dynamics. This general scheme is interesting in its own right and therefore, although the basic idea is not new, we present it in a system-independent setting.     Quantized bulk fermions in the Randall-Sundrum brane model

    The lowest order quantum corrections to the effective action arising from quantized massive fermion fields in the Randall-Sundrum background spacetime are computed. The boundary conditions and their relation with gauge invariance are examined in detail. The possibility of Wilson loop symmetry breaking in brane models is also analysed. The self-consistency requirements, previously considered in the case of a quantized bulk scalar field, are extended to include the contribution from massive fermions. It is shown that in this case it is possible to stabilize the radius of the extra dimensions but it is not possible to simultaneously solve the hierarchy problem, unless the brane tensions are dramatically fine tuned, supporting previous claims.Comment: 25 pages, 1 figure, RevTe

    Kinetics of Gag-specific cytotoxic T lymphocyte responses during the clinical course of HIV-1 infection: A longitudinal analysis of rapid progressors and long-term asymptomatics.

    To gain more insight into the role of HIV-1-specific cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTL) in the pathogenesis of AIDS, we investigated temporal relations between HIV-1 Gag-specific precursor CTL (CTLp), HIV-1 viral load, CD4+ T cell counts, and T cell function. Six HIV-1-infected subjects, who were asymptomatic for more than 8 yr with CD4+ counts > 500 cells/mm3, were compared with six subjects who progressed to AIDS within 5 yr after HIV-1 seroconversion. In the long-term asymptomatics, persistent HIV-1 Gag-specific CTL responses and very low numbers of HIV-1-infected CD4+ T cells coincided with normal and stable CD4+ counts and preserved CD3 mAb-induced T cell reactivity for more than 8 yr. In five out of six rapid progressors Gag-specific CTLp were also detected. However, early in infection the number of circulating HIV-1-infected CD4+ T cells increased despite strong and mounting Gag-specific CTL responses. During subsequent clinical progression to AIDS, loss of Gag-specific CTLp coincided with precipitating CD4+ counts and severe deterioration of T cell function.
